A peek at what we make
I have some projects in the works that required me to add a lathe to the shop (as if I wasn’t already hoping to find a reason for one!). As excited as I am to get started on these projects, the reality of the situation is that it’s been nearly 20 years since I used a lathe. So, I started off with some practice turnings.
First was a basic spindle. Nothing fancy, or usable even. Just a long narrow piece of wood that I took from square to round, then practiced some grooves, beads, etc.. Afterwards, I felt it was time for something else that would yield an actual item.
I have some really nice Padauk with a streak of sapwood running through it. The wife has yet to have me make something for her to bring in to work and showcase. Enter the candy bowl! It was really a lot of fun to make and came out better than I had hoped. I need more practice on cleaning up my interior tool marks and making the bottom flatter, but fortunately these are not skills that my upcoming projects will need.
I should clarify- they are not skills my immediate upcoming projects will need. I had so much fin making that bowl that I definitely see more of these in my future 🙂
